STUTTGART, May 1, 2019
With World No. 13 Karen Khachanov and World No. 14 Daniil Medvedev, two players from Russia lead the entry list into this year’s MercedesCup. The ATP 250 event, which made the switch from clay to grass from 2015, opens the grass-court swing alongside the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch on June 10 to 16, 2019.
Khachanov and Medvedev will be joined by fellow top 20-players Milos Raonic from Canada, Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, Frenchman Gael Monfils and Canadian young gun Denis Shapovalov.
With former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, Australia’s enfant terrible Nick Kyrgios and teenager Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada a couple more entertaining players are part of the line-up.
“The field is a perfect mix of top stars and highly talented NextGen players like Félix Auger-Aliassime or Denis Shapovalov,” says tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
Over the past three years, however, Roger Federer was the tournament’s main attraction. The 37-year-old from Switzerland clinched the title in Stuttgart last year but decided to skip the event in 2019. Federer will start into the grass-court season one week later at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Westphalia.
