TURIN, April 23, 2016
Gastao Elias and Enrique López-Pérez will compete in Sunday’s final at the €42,500 Torino Challenger held at Monviso Tennis Club.
The third seed from Portugal eased past Laslo Djere, winning 6-3, 6-2. Elias saved all three break points he faced, converting four of his own to seal victory in one hour and 23 minutes. He will appear in his first title match since lifting the Challenger trophy in Guayaquil in November last year.
López-Pérez outlasted Filippo Volandri 7-6, 6-4. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who has already claimed two ITF Futures titles this season in China, sent down six aces and capitalized on five of his nine break point opportunities to advance to his maiden final on the ATP Challenger Tour after one hour and 37 minutes. Both players will meet for the first time.
Earlier the day, top-seeds Andrej Martin and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo captured the doubles title, winning the final against Rameez Junaid and Mateusz Kowalczyk 4-6, 7-6, 12-10 in one hour and 46 minutes.
“A great victory for us,” told Podlipnik-Castillo after the match in Italian. “Thanks to crowd. It is nice to see so many people here for a doubles final. It was a great experience this week and I will come back next year and hope to achieve a better result in singles as well.”
