Two US-Americans headline semifinal play at the $50,000 Tallahassee Tennis Challenger. Matches kick off on Friday afternoon at Forestmeadows Tennis Complex.
18-year-old US-American Frances Tiafoe continues his run for a maiden Tallahassee Tennis Challenger title as he takes on fellow countryman Ryan Harrison in the semifinals.
Tiafoe, who reached the final here just last year, defeated defending champion Facundo Arguello, fellow US-American Mitchell Krueger, and No.1 seed Donald Young en route to the semifinals.
Harrison is through to his second semifinal in Tallahassee, having reached this stage previously in 2013. The 23-year old beat Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen, Ecuador’s Giovanni Lapentti and fellow US-American Noah Rubin.
The pair is tied 1-1 in their head-to-head, with Harrison winning their most recent encounter in Memphis in a tight three sets.
It’s an all-European semifinal as 19-year-old Quentin Halys and 28-year-old James McGee face off.
Halys, who is through to his first semifinal of the year, defeated No.4 seed Bjorn Fratangelo, qualifier Sekou Bangoura, and Great Britain’s James Ward this week in Tallahasse.
McGee is through to the Tallahassee Challenger semifinals for the second time in his career, having reached this stage in 2014. The qualifier defeated Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, No.5 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, and US-American young gun Stefan Kozlov en route. He is the first qualifier to reach the semifinals here since 2011 when US-American Wayne Odesnik made a run to the final after qualifying for the main draw.
This will be the pair’s first career meeting.
FSU’s No.1 doubles team of Benjamin Lock/Marco Nunez fell in quarterfinal play to No.3 seed Purav Raja/Divij Sharan. The Indian duo sets up a semifinal meeting with defending doubles champions Dennis Novikov/Julio Peralta, who ousted Nicolas Jarry/Giovanni Lapentti earlier in the day.
