Djokovic Opens Australian Open Title Defence Against Verdasco

MELBOURNE, January 13, 2017

This is the 105th edition of the Australian Championships, which began in 1905, as well as being the 49th Australian Open and the 196th Grand Slam tournament of the Open Era.

Melbourne Park hosts the tournament for the 30th year. It was first played here in 1988, when the venue was known as Flinders Park. Total prize money for the men’s singles at the 2017 Australian Open is AUD$18,430,000.

Having won the Australian Open title in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016, Novak Djokovic is bidding to take sole ownership of the record for Australian titles. He is currently tied with Roy Emerson on 6 Australian titles. Djokovic opens his Melbourne campaign against Fernando Verdasco. The 29-year-old from Serbia leads 9-4 in head-to-head records. The pair met last Friday in a stunning semi-final encounter of the Qatar Open in Doha, where the Spaniard missed five match points and Djokovic advanced to eventually clinch the title.

Andy Murray is looking to become the first man in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title after losing 5 finals at any one Grand Slam. He finished as runner-up to Roger Federer here in 2010, and to Djokovic in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Djokovic, Federer, Goran Ivanisevic and Ivan Lendl are the only players in the Open Era to lose 3 Grand Slam finals at one major before winning the title. The World No. 1 starts in Melbourne against Illya Marchenko from the Ukraine. The only previous meeting between the two took place here at the 2011 Australian Open. The Briton emerged victorious in three sets.
