MONTREAL, March 20, 2017 (Tennis Canada Press Release)
Tennis Canada announced Monday that Uniprix Stadium in Montreal will host the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II playoff tie between Canada and Kazakhstan on April 22 and 23, 2017.
“We are happy to have the chance to play at home, in a facility that the girls know very well since it is our National Training Centre, a second home for many Canadian players,” said Sylvain Bruneau, captain of the Canadian Fed Cup team. “With our young team that excelled in the zonal competition, we showcased our increasing depth. We will be facing a very strong opponent, but we will be able to choose the surface and we will have the crowd behind us.”
Fed Cup returns to the province of Quebec after five successful ties were hosted in Montreal and Quebec City over the past three years. Tennis Canada has chosen Uniprix Stadium as the venue for this playoff tie.
Canada is currently ranked no. 16 on the Fed Cup world rankings. A young Canadian squad of Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (16 years old), Charlotte Robillard-Millette (18 years old), Katherine Sebov (18 years old), and Carol Zhao (21 years old) finished first at the Americas Zone Group I event in Metepec, Mexico in February and earned a berth in next month’s World Group II playoffs. Canada defeated Venezuela, Bolivia, and Paraguay in the round robin stage of the event before sweeping Chile in the final.
The composition of both teams will be announced in April. Kazakhstan will be stiff competition for the Canadians with world no. 31 Yulia Putintseva and world no. 48 Yaroslava Shvedova among their ranks. Kazakhstan will be competing in a World Group II playoff tie for just the second time in team history after falling to France at the same stage of the Fed Cup competition in 2013. This will be the first meeting between the two countries.
The winner of the tie will earn a place in World Group II for 2018 while the loser will be relegated to the zonal events.
