Bertens To Defend Nürnberger Versicherungscup

NUREMBERG, April 18, 2017

The organizers of the NÜRNBERGER Versicherungscup have released the acceptance list for next month’s $250,000 WTA International event. Defending champion Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands will headline the competitors for the 2017 edition held from 20 to 27 May at the venue of the 1. Fc Nürnberg.

The World No. 20 will be joined by Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan. Laura Siegemund and Julia Görgers, who were both picked by Germany’s Fed Cup captain Barbara Rittner for the Play-Off tie against the Ukraine next weekend, will be among the top eight seeds of the main draw.

Eugenie Bouchard, who captured the title here in 2014, will also return to Nuremberg. The former World No. 5 has been struggling with form of late, having lost in the opening round for four consecutive times. Last week, Bouchard returned to the ITF Circuit but fell to US-American Victoria Duval in the quarterfinals. The WTA tournament in Germany could be the right place to regain some confidence. Excitement seemed to be guaranteed.

“It will be an action-packed week on and off the courts. We would like create some unforgettable memories for our spectators, so that they will remember the tournament with pleasure and return gladly in order to visit the event again,” tournament director Sandra Reichel told.

Several side events are going to take place on Super-Sunday (21 May). The day will kick off with a panel discussion featuring Judy Murray, Germany’s Fed Cup captain Barbara Rittner and Eurosport TV-host Barbara Schett-Eagle. The trio will discuss the topic „Bad Mum – Good Mum. The Influence of Parents in Professional Tennis“.
