LEXINGTON, August 4, 2017
Dominik Koepfer headlined second round action at the $75,000 Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships, held at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center in Lexington. The 23-year-old German knocked out the tournament’s number one and #NextGenATP star Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 on Thursday evening.
Koepfer, who is currently ranked on a career high World No. 282 and clinched two ITF Futures titles this season, withstood 11 aces and broke his opponent’s serve seven times to prevail in one hour and 39 minutes. Koepfer will appear in his third consecutive ATP Challenger quarterfinal after Winnetka and Binghamton.
Next up for the Tulane University graduate will be in-form-Briton Cameron Norrie. The 21-year-old lifted his maiden trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour in Binghamton last Sunday and defeated US-American Jared Hiltzik 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last eigth in Lexington.
Fourth seed Michael Mmoh beat Ryan Haviland 6-4, 6-4 in an all-US-American-encounter. The 19-year-old from Bradenton sent down eight aces, winning 90 per cent of his first service points to advance after one hour and 36 minutes.
Mmoh will next face Daniel Nguyen. The 26-year-old from the United States rallied past James McGee of Ireland 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Nguyen saved 10 of the 11 break points he faced, converting two of his own to seal victory in two hours and two minutes.
Former Wildcats Jomby/Quigley reach Doubles Semi-Finals
In front of packed stands, former University of Kentucky All-Americans Tom Jomby of France and US-American Eric Quigley advanced into the doubles semi-finals with a 6-3, 0-6, 10-4 win to book their spot into the night session on Friday night.
The former Wildcat All-Americans got two breaks of serve in the opening set from the fourth-seeded pairing of Jarryd Chalin and Luke Saville from Australia and raced out to a 6-3 first-set win in just under 30 minutes. In the second set, Quigley and Jomby did not get a game off of Chaplin and Saville, as the Aussie pair won all nine points on their first serve in the set to send the match to a third-set tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, Jomby and Quigley got a mini-break right off the bat with a return winner from Quigley and then got three more breaks along the way to a 10-4 win in the 10-point tiebreak. With the win, the pairing, who had never played together before this week, will next face Marcos Giron from the United States and Jose Statham of New Zealand.
