SAN MARINO, May 16, 2015
The ATP Challenger in San Marino will not be held this year due to financial problems. After 27 years of great Tennis, being part of the ATP Tour in the 1990s and of the Challenger Circuit since 2001, there will be no clay court action in the micro-state this summer.
The Federation of the Republic of Monte Titano announced that they could not make request for registration by the ATP due to lack of a sponsor, not being able to bear the costs of the organization.
The tournament was born in 1988 and was part of the ATP Tour from 1989 to 2000. From 2001 to 2014, San Marino hosted an ATP Challenger event. In 2013 the event was honoured as best Challenger in the world. A couple of great clay court players like Thomas Muster (1993, 1995), Albert Costa, Felix Mantilla and Guillermo Perez Roldan lifted the trophy in San Marino. Adrian Ungur was the last champion in 2014.
The organization was unable to break even, as costs have been covered by title sponsor CEPU for most of the years and the new sponsorship with energy drink Go&Fun lasted only for one year ending in 2014.
