Giron, Redlicki Cause Upsets As Aptos Challenger Main Kicks Off

On the opening day of the Main Draw at the Nordic Naturals Challenger a first upset could be witnessed, as US-American wild card entry Martin Redlicki, currently ranked World No. 772 knocked out sixth seed Mohamed Safwat of Egypt 7-6(3), 6-4.

The 22-year-old Boca Raton resident struck seven aces, winning 71 per cent of his first service points to advance in one hour and 37 minutes. Next up for Redlicki will be Marcos Giron. The qualifier from the United States cruised past compatriot Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-0 in only 58 minutes.

Ernesto Escobedo saw similar success as he defeated Egor Gerasimov from Belarus 7-5,7-6(6). The 22-year-old US-American turned pro in 2014 and has a career high of World No. 67, which he achieved in July of 2017. JC Aragone from the United States had a tight victory against Australian qualifier Luke Saville, as the two went head to head 7-5 7-6(6). Aragone is currently ranked World No. 276, which is also his career high.
