BERLIN, July 19, 2020

Following his triumph at the first leg of the bett1ACES tennis exhibition on grass at the Steffi-Graf-Stadion in Grunewald, Dominic Thiem has also become the champion of the second tournament held inside Hangar 6 of Berlin’s former international airport Tempelhof.

The top seed from Austria defeated #NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday’s final. Thiem sent down five aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in about one hour of play.

“This was probably my best match in the last four months,” Thiem told former professional Markus Zoecke in his post-match interview. “I am super happy. It was a match at good level. Although everything was very nice here, I hope that this was my last exhibition event and the regular tour will resume with the US Open. It’s not sure yet but the plan is to go there in mid-August.”

As the champion of the entire men’s event, Thiem took away from Berlin €50,000 in prize money.

Sevastova takes women’s title

Later in the day, Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia fought past Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 in the women’s final to clinch the tournament title.

“She dominated the match at the beginning with her strong service. But I always tried to stay in the game and managed to break in the second set,” Sevastova said. “Fortunately, I had the better end for myself in the match tie-break. The conditions inside the hangar were ideal for my game. The wins here against three strong opponents give me a lot of confidence.”
