STARNBERG, November 27, 2020

Teenager Thiago Agustin Tirante from Argentina has reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Challenger tournament for the first time. The 19-year-old from La Plata defeated Spaniard Oriol Roca Batalla 6-3, 6-3 in his second-round match Thursday at the $52,080 Lima Challenger held at the Centro Promotor de Tenis Miraflores.

Agustin Tirante, who captured the 2019 French Open Boys’ Doubles title alongside Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida, capitalized on four of his eight break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 34 minutes. Nineteen-year-old Pucinelli de Almeida achieved the same feat and advanced to the stage of the final eight the same day at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis.

Cerundolo knocks off Coria

Agustin Tirante will next take on Francisco Cerundolo. The in-form Argentine, champion of last week’s Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil in Ecuador, emerged victorious from the highly-awaited encounter against top seed Federico Coria of Argentina. The World No. 162 from Buenos Aires won 52 per cent of the total points played to seal a 7-5, 7-5 victory in one hour and 56 minutes.

Cerundolo will next play Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile, who knocked out the last Peruvian standing in the tournament, Juan Pablo Varillas, 6-1, 6-2. The match lasted one hour and 13 minutes.
