MARBELLA, April 4, 2021
Spain’s scenic city of Marbella is hosting back-to-back tournaments these days at the Costa del Sol. Right after Sunday’s conclusion of the AnyTech365 Andalucia Open ATP Challenger 80 event, the inaugural ATP 250 tournament kicked off with the qualifying at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano.
Top seed Evgeny Donskoy remained untroubled during his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Leo Borg from Sweden, 17-year-old son of tennis legend Bjorn Bjorg, who made his first appearance on the ATP Tour. The World No. 128 from Russia broke the teenager’s serve five times to advance after only 49 minutes on Estadio Manolo Santana.

Donskoy will play Bernabe Zapata Miralles for a spot in the main draw. The 24-year-old Spaniard eased past Latvian veteran Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 6-1.
Over on Court 4, Steven Diez of Canada defeated No. 2 seed Peter Gojowczyk from Germany 6-2, 6-3. The 30-year-old Toronto native with Spanish parents sent down three aces and won 70 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after 69 minutes. Diez will next play in-form Serbian Nikola Milojevic, who captured the title of Zadar Open in Croatia last Sunday.
In other action, Mario Vilella Martinez of Spain edged out No. 3 seed Antoine Hoang of France 6-2, 6-4 to face compatriot Carlos Gomez Herrera in the second round. The wild card entry beat Martin Klizan from Slovakia 6-4, 6-1. Fourth seed Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland fought past Roman Safiullin from Russia 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-1 to meet Lorenzo Giustino next. The 29-year-old emerged victorious from the all-Italian affair with Roberto Marcora, 7-6(4), 6-4.
