MARBELLA/STARNBERG, March 21, 2022
Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has been awarded a wild card into the main draw of next week’s AnyTech365 Andalucía Open. This was announced by the organizers of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 tournament during a virtual press conference on Monday. The clay-court event is taking place from March 27 to April 3 at the Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella, Spain.
The 36-year-old Swiss will make his return to the courts for the first time since losing in the first round of the Qatar Open in Doha in March last year. Wawrinka achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 3 in 2014 and ended 2014 to 2016 at World No. 4 before undergoing two left knee surgeries in 2017 and two left foot surgeries in 2021. The Lausanne native is currently ranked World No. 232. Wawrinka will compete in his first ATP Challenger Tour tournament since reaching the quarterfinals of the Prague II tournament in August 2020.
Molcan leads the field
Ten Top 100 players will headline the action led by World No. 67 Alex Molcan. The 24-year-old from Slovakia will seek his third ATP Challenger career crown, his first since Helsinki in November last season.
Molcan will be joined by home favourites Pablo Andujar, champion in 2019, Roberto Carballes Baena and last year’s runner-up Jaume Munar. Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic, Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, Danish teen sensation Holger Rune, Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, Czech youngster Jiri Lehecka and Italian Marco Cecchinato will also be part of the line-up.
Tickets for the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open are on sale and can be purchased online through the tournament’s official website.
