Ficovich will next oppose fellow Argentine Facundo Juarez, who beat his compatriot and qualifier Tomas Farjat 6-0, 6-4 in 63 minutes.

In-form Francisco Comesana, champion of last week’s Challenger Corrientes, began his Buenos Aires campaign with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 first-round win over Nicolas Alvaraz from Peru. The World No. 239 from Argentina won 73 per cent of his first-service points and broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after two hours and 11 minutes.

Up next for Comesana will be 23-year-old local wild card entry Juan Bautista Otegui, who edged out Japanese qualifier Naoki Nakagawa 6-4, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
