Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland broke new ground at the Sofia Open on Sunday when he beat #NextGenATP Dane Holger Rune 6-4, 7-6(8) to claim his maiden title on the ATP Tour.

The World No. 95 struck seven aces and won 76 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 41 minutes.

“I played a great, great match for sure,” Huesler said in his on-court interview. “I am completely taken aback. I am lost for words. it was a great match. I just tried to stay focused, stayed calm and I am just really happy I was able to make it.”

In a dream week at the ATP 250 event in Bulgaria, Huesler battled his way through the bottom half of the draw with wins over second-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux, Kamil Majchrzak of Poland and #NextGenATP Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

“This whole week has been a complete fairy tale for me,” added Huesler. “I would have been happy to pass a couple of rounds and I’m holding the trophy here.”

The 26-year-old Zürich native, a five-time ATP Challenger Tour champion, earned €81,310 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points.
