ISMANING/STARNBERG, October 12, 2022

Max Hans Rehberg headlined Wednesday’s first-round action at the Wolffkran Open by Tannenhof in Ismaning, Germany. The 19-year-old local wild card entry upset Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic, World No. 108 and No. 2 seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour carpet event, 6-3, 6-4.

Rehberg, who captured his maiden title on the Pro Circuit on the same surface in Forbach, France two weeks ago, withstood nine aces and broke his rival’s serve two times to seal victory in one hour and two minutes.

“I tried to find a good rhythm on the serve, which I was able to do very well from the middle of the first set,” said Rehberg. “I landed a lot of first serves that were also well placed. My flat play just goes really well with the carpet and luckily after I broke him twice it was all over. At the moment I’m just feeling pure joy, because after the defeats at the start in Ismaning in the last two years, I really wanted this win.”

The 596th-ranked teenager, who practices close to the Tennis Club Ismaning at the TennisBase Oberhaching, will next take on Dutch veteran Robin Haase. The 35-year-old The Hague native fought past Czech Zdenek Kolar 6-4, 7-6(6) in one hour and 18 minutes.

Earlier in the day, third-seeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil opened his title bid with a solid 6-3, 6-4 over German wild card entry Philip Florig. The World No. 122, who finished runner-up to Jelle Sels at last week’s Open de Vendée in Mouilleron-Le-Captif, France fired 15 aces and won 90 per cent of his first-service points to advance in 56 minutes.

Up next for Pospisil will be German qualifier Elmar Ejupovic, who rallied past No. 6 seed Antoine Bellier of Switzerland 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and six minutes.
