Roberto Carballes Baena was forced to retire in the second round of the inaugural Copa Faulcombridge Ciudad de Valencia. The second seed of the €67,960 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event in Valencia was trailing 6-2, 1-1 when he stopped playing due to a back injury in his match on Wednesday against French teenager Luca van Assche, who captured the 2021 French Open Boys’ Singles title. The 18-year-old World No. 200 will next take on either Andrea Vavassori of Italy or Spanish qualifier Javier Barranco Cosano.

In the top half of the draw, Nikola Milojevic rallied from a set down to outlast local wild card entry Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. The 27-year-old Serbian struck six aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 38 minutes. Up next for Milojevic will be the winner of the encounter between Russian qualifier Ivan Gakhov and Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria.

In other action, Andrea Pellegrino of Italy battled past Nuno Borges from Portugal 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 49 minutes and Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz defeated Serbian veteran Miljan Zekic 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 42 minutes.
